Abstract

[en] Renewable energy represents a crucial step towards building a sustainable and resilient future for both current and future generations. However, integrating renewable energy into traditional power grids presents challenges due to its intermittent nature and the need for grid adaptation. Microgrids offer a solution by providing localized and decentralized energy systems that effectively manage fluctuations in renewable energy generation.\\

The core purpose of this thesis is to develop a virtual microgrid that is applied to the MiRIS microgrid at \textit{John Cockerill Energy}'s Seraing site. The virtual model is built using \texttt{Typhoon Hil Control Center} software, utilizing a virtual Hil device. A bottom-up approach is adopted to model the different components of the microgrid including the Battery Energy Storage System, Photovoltaic installation, Diesel generator, Transformer, and Loads. By accurately replicating the physical microgrid's behavior, this digital twin allows for detailed comparative studies, performance evaluation, and exploration of operational strategies. The main emphasis lies on the microgrid's components and their internal control, therefore, microgrid controller and higher levels of control are beyond the scope of this analysis. \\

The thesis is structured into four parts. The first part explores the fundamental operating principles of microgrids, emphasizing the importance of adopting a virtual model approach for modeling. The second part conducts a state-of-the-art analysis of the various microgrid components. The third part is dedicated to building the different components of the microgrid and evaluating their fidelity with the real physical devices at MiRIS. For instance, the power produced by the modeled PV installation is compared with the real PV operation under given meteorological conditions. The last chapter presents the microgrid model composed of the previously built assets and showcases the stability of the models, as well as their ability to operate under different scenarios such as start-stop of each asset, on-grid/off-grid switching, and off-grid operation with non-linear loads.
Finally, a comprehensive conclusion is drawn, incorporating various perspectives for future work.
