Abstract

[fr] This paper aims to investigate whether the Belgian fiscal policy was sustainable during the period 1970-2017 or not. To assess sustainability, the long-run impact of an increase in the debt-to-GDP on the non-interest primary balance was scrutinised. Significant evidence for a positive reaction of the non-interest primary balance to an increase in public debt was found. The paper is structured in two parts. The first part defines the concept of public debt and debt sustainability. The second part is an application of Henning Bohn’s debt sustainability assessment to the Belgian case.
